Gerald R. Ford International Airport (GRR) is happy to introduce the new state-of-the-art checked baggage inspection system, the first of its kind in the U.S! Part of the Terminal Enhancement Project, the Consolidated Baggage Inspection System (CBIS) with Individual Carrier System (ICS) reduces manual baggage handling, increases efficiency, and keeps bags moving through the airport more quickly and reliably.
“We’re updating the check-in experience and adding elements to enhance your experience as our guest,” said Casey Ries, GRR’s Chief Asset Development Officer.
This advanced technology automates and streamlines the process for bags from ticket counter to aircraft. The moment your bag leaves your hands, it’s placed into its own dedicated, tote. Your bag stays securely inside this single tote from the counter, through security, all the way to the airline handling area. RFID technology provides real-time tracking and traceability, and because bags never touch or collide the risk of a loose strap causing a jam or a bag getting accidentally misrouted is minimized.
This simplified baggage system will ultimately allow consolidation of all ticket counters into one central location, creating an intuitive airport experience.
American, United and Frontier Airlines are the first airlines to move into the new space and begin using the system starting in September 2026. The remaining airlines will move and begin using the new system by the end of 2027.
But travelers, fret not! The new self-baggage process is simple to navigate, and airline representatives will still be available for questions, support, or traditional ticket counter check-in for guests who prefer this service.
