On August 28, 2019, the Gerald R. Ford International Airport announced Project Elevate, a three-development expansion of Ford Airport that begins with a $90 million extension of Concourse A to accommodate projected passenger growth over the next 20 years.
Airport leadership is currently seeking federal approval for the second development of Project Elevate, which proposes to add a federal inspection station, or FIS, capable of screening international commercial passenger flights. The third development will be to relocate the current air traffic control tower, or ATCT, to make way for diverse terminal-area developments such as additional tenant hangars and more parking, among others.
No local taxpayer dollars will be used to finance Project Elevate, which will be paid for with a combination of federal and state grants, municipal bonds issued by the airport, and user fees.
Construction on the second phase of the Gateway Transformation Project has begun and will continue through Summer 2020. These improvements are focused on the airline ticket counters and baggage service offices, baggage claim, curbside, and ‘front of house’ areas. The main features will include relocating TSA screening equipment from the airline queuing areas, upgrading and updating the spacing of the baggage claim carousels, and adding food and beverage, and restrooms to the area near baggage claim. The project will also include new terrazzo flooring, new LED lighting fixtures, upgraded signage, and more.
This $30.2 million construction project was completed in 2019. Major features include: 153,000 square yards of new concrete for future airport development and aircraft loadings; upgrades to the airports deicing material recovery system; upgraded stormwater drainage system and underground utilities to accommodate for future airport development; and reducing energy usage by installation of all new LED apron lighting.
The area outlined in red below shows the areas that were a part of this project.
There are currently no roadway constructions nearby that would impact your travel to the airport.
