1. Download travel apps for convenience
Whether you’re a seasoned jetsetter or planning your first big trip, having the right tips at your fingertips can make all the difference. From packing smart to staying comfortable on long flights, this guide has everything you need to ensure a smooth and stress-free journey.
2. Arrive early and pre-book your parking
Plan to arrive at the airport at least two hours before your flight to allow time for check-in and security. Be mindful of weather and traffic conditions, as these can impact your travel time. During busy holiday periods, consider giving yourself extra time to ensure a hassle-free journey.

3. Prepare for TSA screenings
Planning ahead and packing properly can make the screening process smoother. Familiarize yourself with TSA’s rules using the “Can I Bring?” section of their MyTSA app. Knowing what’s allowed in your carry-on and checked bags will help you breeze through security without surprises.
4. Pack thoughtfully
Start with empty bags to avoid accidentally packing prohibited items. Place liquids in resealable plastic bags or unbreakable containers to prevent spills and speed up security checks. Keep essential items—like your ID, boarding pass, and quart-sized liquid bag—easily accessible. Pack valuables, electronics, medications, and important documents in your carry-on. Choose luggage with compartments to stay organized and make repacking easier. Finally, leave sharp objects, oversized liquids, and other restricted items at home to avoid delays.
5. Make your luggage stand out
Make your luggage easy to spot at baggage claim by using a brightly colored luggage tag, handle wrap, or unique stickers and patches. Avoid dangling items that could get caught during handling. For added security, use TSA-approved locks and consider a GPS tracker or Apple Air Tag to monitor your bag’s location. Clearly label your luggage with your name, phone number, and email address, but avoid including your full home address for privacy.
6. Check your travel documents
Ensure you have a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license and updated travel documents well before your departure date. If traveling internationally, check your passport’s expiration date well in advance as many countries require at least six months of validity beyond your travel dates.
7. Traveling with infants and children
Make your journey with little ones smooth and enjoyable by utilizing family-friendly amenities at GRR Airport, such as our Kids’ Port Playrooms, nursing rooms, and family restrooms. When packing, give each child a backpack with quiet toys or electronics (with headphones), and pack easy-to-handle snacks that comply with TSA liquid rules. Bring pre-moistened wipes, resealable bags, and a change of clothes for unexpected messes.
Familiarize yourself with FAA guidelines for child restraint systems (CRS):
- Under 20 pounds: Rear-facing CRS
- 20–40 pounds: Forward-facing CRS
- Over 40 pounds: Aircraft seat belt
For infants, pack extra clothes for baby and yourself, diapers, wipes, and teething supplies. Plan to nurse, bottle-feed, or offer a pacifier during takeoff and landing to ease ear pressure.
Most airlines allow strollers and car seats to be checked for free at the gate or ticket counter. Gate-checking strollers ensures easy access in the airport, especially during layovers. Compact carriers are also ideal for navigating terminals hands-free. Check your airline’s specific policies for these items in advance.
8. Traveling with pets
Traveling with pets or assistance animals requires careful planning. Assistance animals, including guide dogs, are welcome in all public areas of GRR Airport and must be screened when entering the sterile area. Check with your airline for specific policies regarding assistance animals and visit the TSA website for screening details.
For pets traveling in the cabin, ensure their carrier meets airline size requirements and acclimate your pet to it beforehand. Pets must remain in carriers at all times in the terminal, except for registered service animals.
For pets traveling in the cargo hold, confirm airline policies and follow federal and state regulations. Pets must be at least eight weeks old, fully weaned, and travel in a secure, ventilated kennel. Avoid feeding them solid food six hours before departure and try to book nonstop flights to reduce stress.
We recommend taking your pet for a bathroom break before entering the security screening checkpoint. GRR offers both pre and post-security relief areas: the pre-security area is located near short-term parking, across from the hotel shuttle drop-off area, while the post-security area is in Concourse A near Gate A4.
For international travel, check quarantine and health requirements in advance. Label your pet’s kennel with your contact information and use a tag with matching details. Bring a photo of your pet as a precaution in case they become lost. Avoid sedation unless advised by a veterinarian and test the medication before travel to ensure a safe reaction.
9. Accessibility and assistance services
It is recommended to arrange wheelchair assistance when booking your flight so that airline personnel can coordinate support across your travel route. To request wheelchair assistance at GRR Airport, call Prospect Airport Services at (616) 550-7643 before your arrival. Alternatively, assistance can be requested at your airline’s ticket counter, the Visitor Information Desk in the baggage claim area, or by speaking with a curbside security officer to page a Passenger Service Assistant.
For passengers with disabilities or medical conditions requiring help navigating security, TSA offers the TSA Cares program. Call their toll-free helpline at 1-855-787-2227 at least 72 hours in advance or submit an online request for assistance. Learn more about the program at TSA’s website.
GRR Airport is proud to participate in the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower program, a global initiative supporting travelers with hidden disabilities. Passengers can request a free Sunflower item, such as a lanyard, at the Visitor Information Desk or security screening checkpoint. The lanyard serves as a discreet signal to staff and partners that the wearer may need additional assistance. The Sunflower program is recognized at many airports, shops, transportation hubs and other public spaces worldwide, making it a valuable tool for the entire travel journey.
Additionally, GRR Airport offers a companion care restroom with a height-adjustable adult changing table in Concourse A near Gate A8 and a sensory room. The sensory room provides a therapeutic environment designed to minimize overstimulation and create a calming, inclusive space for individuals of all ages with cognitive or developmental disabilities.
With these features and services, GRR Airport helps to create a comfortable and accessible travel experience for all passengers.
10. Savor local flavors while you travel
Airports are great places to enjoy a taste of local cuisine. Many offer unique dining options that highlight regional flavors and specialties, making it easy to sample what the area has to offer.
At GRR Airport, there are dining choices for every traveler. From freshly brewed coffee and baked goods to Michigan-made wines and craft beers, you can enjoy a variety of options that reflect some of the best of West Michigan.
Whether you’re fueling up before departure, during a layover, or after you land, exploring these local offerings can make your travel experience more enjoyable.
11. Consider TSA PreCheck or CLEAR
Streamline your airport experience by enrolling in TSA PreCheck or CLEAR. These programs are designed to reduce wait times at security and provide a more convenient screening process. With TSA PreCheck, you can enjoy perks like keeping your shoes, belt, and light jackets on, as well as leaving laptops and liquids in your bag. CLEAR, on the other hand, uses biometric technology to verify your identity, allowing you to bypass security queues and get to a TSA screening point faster. Both programs complement each other and are especially useful during busy travel periods.
12. Pack a comfort kit
A well-prepared comfort kit can make your flight more enjoyable, whether it’s a short trip or a long journey. Essentials like a travel pillow and a lightweight blanket can help you stay comfortable, especially in chilly airplane cabins. Noise canceling headphones are great for blocking out engine sounds and cabin noise, making it easier to relax or enjoy in-flight entertainment. An e-reader or tablet loaded with books, movies, or games is also a great way to pass the time.
If you prefer a weighted blanket, be aware that these may require additional inspection at TSA checkpoints. While generally permitted, it’s a good idea to check the TSA website or contact them directly to confirm guidelines.
13. Stay hydrated and stretch often
Bring a refillable water bottle to fill after passing through security to ensure you have water readily available throughout your journey. During long flights, make an effort to move around by taking short walks up and down the aisle when it’s safe to do so. Additionally, seated stretches, such as ankle rolls, leg lifts, or shoulder shrugs, can help improve circulation and reduce stiffness. Prioritizing hydration and movement will help you feel more refreshed when you reach your destination.
14. Plan for emergencies
Being prepared for unexpected situations can give you peace of mind while traveling. Pack a small first-aid kit with essentials such as adhesive bandages, pain relievers, and antiseptic wipes. Keep a list of your medications, medical conditions, and emergency contacts in your carry-on for easy access. If you take prescription medications, bring enough to last your entire trip, plus a few extra days in case of delays. Store them in their original containers with prescription labels to avoid complications at security or customs.
It’s also a good idea to research healthcare options at your destination, including nearby clinics or hospitals, especially if traveling internationally. With these precautions, you’ll be well-prepared to handle minor health issues or emergencies during your trip.
15. Choose your seat wisely
Picking the right seat can make all the difference in how comfortable you are during your flight. If you love a good view or prefer a quieter spot, a window seat might be perfect - just keep in mind it can feel a bit restrictive if you like to get up and move around. On the other hand, an aisle seat gives you easy access to the restroom and more room to stretch your legs, but it’s also in a high-traffic area, which can make it harder to relax or get some sleep. Taking a little time to think about your needs can go a long way in making your flight more comfortable.
16. Charge your devices before the day of travel
Ensure your devices are fully charged before your travel day to avoid running out of battery during your journey. While many airports and airplanes offer charging stations and power outlets, availability isn’t always guaranteed, especially during busy travel times. A fully charged phone, tablet, or laptop ensures you’ll have access to entertainment, communication, and essential travel information when you need it most.
17. Be Cautious with public Wi-Fi
Public Wi-Fi networks can be a convenient way to stay connected while traveling, but it’s important to use them wisely. Avoid accessing sensitive information, such as bank accounts or personal passwords, when connected to public networks. Using a virtual private network (VPN) can add an extra layer of security or consider sticking to your mobile data for tasks that require privacy. By taking a few simple precautions, you can enjoy the convenience of Wi-Fi while keeping your information secure.
18. Packing workout gear and supplements
When traveling with workout gear or supplements, plan ahead to avoid complications at security. Powders like protein or pre-workout can raise concerns, so keep them in their original containers or clear resealable bags and declare any over 12 ounces, as they may require additional screening. Portable blenders are prohibited in carry-ons if they contain blades but can be packed in checked luggage. A shaker bottle is a great alternative for mixing powders on the go.
For workout equipment, lightweight and portable items like resistance bands or foldable yoga mats are travel-friendly options that fit easily in carry-ons or checked bags. Be mindful that heavier items like dumbbells may exceed weight limits for luggage and incur additional fees.
19. Download offline maps and travel apps
Before your trip, download offline maps for your destination using apps like Google Maps. This ensures you can navigate even if you lose internet access. Additionally, consider downloading travel apps for public transit schedules, local attractions, or translation tools to make your trip smoother and more enjoyable. Being digitally prepared can save time while traveling.
20. Weigh your bag before heading to the airport
Avoid surprises at check-in by weighing your luggage before leaving for the airport. Airlines have weight limits for both checked and carry-on bags and exceeding them can result in additional fees or the inconvenience of repacking at the counter. Use a luggage scale or a household scale to ensure your bag meets the airline’s requirements. If you’re close to the limit, consider redistributing items between bags or removing non-essential items.
